Top 5 Wide Receivers For the 2014-2015 NFL Season

In this edition of my player rankings, we will look into the top wide receivers going into this season. Many of the top receivers from last year remain on top, but every year someone new steps up, so it remains to be seen who that will be this season. Here are my top 5 receivers for this season. NOTE: Due to his uncertain status for this season, Josh Gordon will not be included on this list.

1. Calvin Johnson-Detroit Lions

Megatron is the unquestioned best receiver in the NFL. An absolute nightmare for corners, Johnson continued to put up big numbers last season, catching 84 passes for 1492 yards and 12 touchdowns along with a few highlight reel catches. Johnson is nearly unstoppable in the red zone due to his size and leaping ability, making him impossible to cover in the end zone. For years, Megatron has been making Matthew Stafford look much better than he really is and inflating Stafford’s stats. Look for another huge year out of Calvin Johnson this season.

2. A.J. Green-Cincinnati Bengals

A.J. Green has been improving rapidly and has solidified himself as one of the top receivers in the league. Green, going only into his 4th year in the league, has been the main focus of defenses when playing the Bengals, and has struggled in some games when he is double-teamed, but is starting to show that there is no stopping him and making himself and quarterback Andy Dalton one of the best young combos in the NFL. As he continues to improve, look for Green’s stats to continue to rise each season.

3. Demaryius Thomas-Denver Broncos

The luxury of being Peyton Manning’s favorite target has skyrocketed Thomas into being one of the top receivers in the league. Thomas was the biggest reason for Manning having his record breaking season last year, catching 92 passes for 1430 yards and 14 touchdowns. In an offense full of big time weapons, Thomas has proven to be the top dog of all the skill players, and with Eric Decker lost to the Jets, even more will be asked of Thomas. If the Broncos are to get back to the Super Bowl, Thomas will have to be as good, or even better than last season.

4. Dez Bryant-Dallas Cowboys

Dez has been one of the most consistent receivers in the league the past few seasons, and this year will not be any different. Bryant had another stellar year last season, catching 93 passes for 1233 yards and 13 touchdowns, and  has been Tony Romo’s unquestioned go-to guy for the past few seasons. Like Calvin Johnson, Bryant is an absolute nightmare to cover in the red zone and always seems to come down with the ball. Bryant is a sure bet to be one of the best receivers this season.

5. Julio Jones-Atlanta Falcons

It’s easy to say Jones should not be on this list due to missing the majority of the season last year, but in the five games that Jones played, he was nothing short of spectacular and showed us what he can do. In five games, Jones caught 41 passes for 580 yards and 2 touchdowns, and was the best in the league at that point in the season. Matt Ryan will be looking for a new red zone target with the retirement of Tony Gonzalez, and Jones can be just that guy. Look for a huge year out of Julio Jones.
